What Happens to Ceramics When They Break?

Most broken ceramics end up in landfills. They don’t decompose, and they’re rarely recycled. Here’s how our ReClay Ceramic collection is changing that, one recycled piece at a time.

Why Recycled Ceramics?

We don’t think much about what happens to a ceramic mug when it breaks. We sweep it up, toss it in the bin, and move on. But that broken piece doesn’t disappear. It ends up in a landfill, and it stays there. Unlike glass or metal, ceramics cannot be melted down and remade. They don’t decompose. A broken bowl from your kitchen could sit in a landfill for hundreds of years while new raw clay is mined to replace it.

This is the problem ReClay set out to solve.

Giving Ceramic Waste a Second Life

The ReClay ceramics collection is handcrafted from 40% recycled ceramic waste. As in, broken and rejected pieces that would otherwise have no second life. These pieces are collected, crushed, reprocessed, and blended with iron sands and natural materials into a new material ready to be shaped again. The result reduces the need for newly mined raw clay, keeping non-degradable waste out of already overburdened landfills.

The production process is more efficient too. Recycled ceramic material fires at a lower temperature than virgin clay, meaning shorter kiln times, less energy used, and a smaller carbon footprint, without compromising on the strength, finish, or durability you’d expect from quality tableware.

Crafted by Skilled Hands

Each piece is shaped by hand by skilled artisans in East Java, Indonesia, using traditional ceramic techniques passed down through generations. What begins as waste becomes something dense, refined, and built to last for years of daily use.

It’s a small shift. But it’s a meaningful one.
