Plant-based Wax – Coconut
Originalhome’s scented candles are made from plant-based wax. Their scent comes from plant extracts and essential oils, and they are natural, vegan and paraffin-free. This means that these candles emit less CO₂ than classic candles. The plant-based wax used to make these candles is a coconut wax blend. The candles are hand-poured in a small workshop in Bali, Indonesia. All of the wax, dyes and scents used for our candles are locally sourced and are cruelty-free, phthalate-free and petroleum-free.
Sustainable & local sourcing
Coconut is an eco-friendly choice for candle wax because it naturally produces oil that is easy to extract. The coconut oil is heated twice to remove any remaining moisture from the blocks. The blocks are then reshaped in a tray and ready for dyeing. Some colours are not available in natural pigments; this is why the traditional enfleurage technique is used. This involves extracting colours and absorbing them into the wax using ingredients such as turmeric or beetroot.
Environmentally friendly production
In Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, where our scented candle maker grew up, coconut farming is the main agricultural activity and a sustainable resource. So it was only natural for her to use it when she started her business in Bali. Coconut plantations supply food companies, and the leftovers can be used in smaller quantities to make candles.
She creates the candles’ dyes with natural pigments such as turmeric and makes their scents in her workshop using plant extracts or essential oils.
