2024 Impact Report
At Originalhome, we are proud to share the progress we’ve made in 2024 toward building a greener and more sustainable future. Our mission has always been to source, design, produce, and market homeware that is both eco-friendly and socially responsible. This year, we achieved major milestones that reflect our commitment to people and the planet.
Candles for Trees: planting a greener Tomorrow
In 2024, our Candles for Trees tree-planting program, launched in September 2023, gained momentum. Our candles are currently stocked in more than 400 stores across Europe and growing. Working with Trees for the Future (TREES), we planted over 42,000 trees, a big step in restoring ecosystems and supporting local communities. TREES uses its Forest Garden Approach (FGA) to combine tree planting with crop cultivation, improving soil health, boosting biodiversity, and increasing water retention. This approach empowers farmers by providing them with sustainable ways to grow food and improve their income.
Since 1989, TREES has planted over 350 million trees in sub-Saharan Africa, positively impacting more than 300,000 people. Now recognized as a United Nations World Restoration Flagship, their mission of planting one billion trees by 2030 is inspiring global efforts to reverse environmental damage. Each Originalhome candle contributes to this mission, turning a simple product into a powerful tool for change. Together, we are growing a greener tomorrow.
Lamps for plastic waste: shining a light on cleaner oceans
This year, we partnered with Gotbag to take on ocean-bound plastic pollution. Together, we rescued and repurposed three tons of coastal plastic waste, turning it into materials for our exciting in- and outdoor lamps wich received great initial reception with original home Stockists. Gotbag works with local fishermen and villagers in Indonesia to collect and clean plastic waste, offering them fair payment and a chance to improve their environment. This community-driven approach not only tackles plastic pollution but also creates income opportunities and raises awareness about better waste management.
At Originalhome, low-tech production is our signature. By using simple, cottage-industry-based machinery, we process the recycled plastic into raw materials for our lamps. We believe that keeping all elements of production low-tech lowers the barrier for small-scale industries to enter, increasing adoption and sharing wealth more evenly. This creates the sustainable business model for people and the planet that we are relentlessly promoting.
Our lamps are more than functional—they are proof that small actions can lead to big change. Together with our partners, we are creating solutions that reduce waste, support communities, and light up homes in more ways than one.
Why waste wood: bringing timber back to life
Reclaimed wood has always been at the heart of Originalhome’s designs. In 2024, we saved over 9 tons of reclaimed wood from going to waste, crafting it into beautiful home accessories. This is made possible through our partnerships with two organizations that share our commitment to sustainability and community impact.
Our tableware partner in Bali and East Java, repurposes reclaimed teak using low-tech methods that preserve traditional craftsmanship. Their social program also employs individuals with physical and mental disabilities, offering meaningful work and promoting inclusivity.
Why waste wood transforms wood from old structures into unique, high-quality products, ensuring that production remains at the village level. By repurposing wood, they help reduce the need for new timber, protect forests, and provide income for local artisans.
Our low-tech approach allows us to keep production simple, affordable, and accessible, ensuring that wealth is created at the community level. Every product made from reclaimed wood is part of a circular economy, where nothing is wasted and everything has value.
Looking to the Future
At Originalhome, we’re not just reflecting on the achievements of 2024; we continue working on a sustainable future. Our ambition is to perfect a business model where innovative use of waste materials, combined with low-tech cottage industry methods and sleek modern designs, drives a business that is not only eco-friendly and socially responsible but also profitable—a model we are determined to refine and promote.
In 2024, we have taken significant steps towards this vision, such as planting 42,000 trees for farmers in Africa.
In our quest to clean up the planetand show that waste can be turned into something beautiful, we have saved 9 tons of reclaimed wood and 2 tons of other waste materials.
Our recycled lampshades have repurposed 3 tons of coastal plastic waste. These milestones are just the start.
In 2025, we have exciting new product developments for our candle range and thus grow our Tree planting program. We aim to expand our waste plastic product offerings to drive our waste collection program. We are also focused on further developing our supply chain for collecting and processing waste materials. This includes building partnerships and investing in our organization to drive innovation in new waste materials.
By creating great products that align with our vision, we’re working toward a future where thoughtful design and sustainable practices make a real difference. Together, we can continue to inspire change and create a healthier planet for all.
