The basket collection is woven by hand by special craftspeople. They braid or roll the plant material into ropes first or they work with pre braided ropes. After braiding they can start weaving the basket. When creating new designs they make a mold from iron first. The mold is used guarantee consistency in size and shape according to specifications. The weaving and braiding techniques are based on ancient traditions. The choice of technique depends on the kind of plant fiber or the design.
These craftspeople, predominantly women, live in rural villages and work in a modest workshop or on the porch of their own homes and often on their own time schedule. Basket weaving is an important additional source of income in rural villages because the main income often depends on seasonal work on the land.
It’s interesting to watch the weaving of the baskets because there is a certain rhythm to it and the speed with which the basket are woven is unbelievable. It takes a long time to fully master the basket weaving skill.
