Crafts
Designed by nature, skilfully crafted by people
We celebrate craftsmanship and small-scale production. Our products are skilfully handmade by artisans from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Tanzania. They are carefully crafted using traditional skills and simple tools like the handloom or the spinning wheel. Some patterns and techniques are based on ancient techniques and limited people participate in this process nowadays.
Executing a craft requires endurance, sometimes extreme strength, and a lot of concentration.
Although it is a low barrier of entry method, it takes years to perfect a craft. We value the nature of this way of working because the end product is inseparably connected with the maker. It is their signature.
Crafting a cloth, basket or lampshade by hand takes time. Not hours but days.
And because artisans depend on the elements, products may vary in shape colour and size. When there is a lot of rain they cannot dry the raw materials, when there are floods, they cannot work. This means that handcrafted products sometimes take longer to produce.
