The Sustainable Pioneers from Central Java, Indonesia
Johni & Lola started their company in 1995. Out of respect for the natural resources of Java, they solely use natural, sustainable raw materials for the production of home decoration and use all materials as efficiently as possible. They love working with quickly renewable plants like abaca, water hyacinth and seagrass. As true pioneers, they developed multiple ways to recycle and apply new materials such as newspapers and old cement bag paper. They even developed a technique for the chemical-free processing of pandamus. All their raw materials are locally sourced.
The village based manufacturing system allows the makers to work from home on their own time schedule, as well as in the nearby workshop. This is especially important for women. This way they can combine work with child care and other duties and earn their own income. Through education and donations Johni & Lola help to raise the socio-economic status of the people in these rural villages.
