Jute
Jute is a plant that grows widely in Bangladesh and is used as a raw material for baskets, cushions and placemats. Jute is a long, soft plant fiber and very versatile and strong. Jute is one of the most quickly renewable materials as it grows back in 4 to 6 months, using a limited amount of fertilizer or pesticide and is extremely durable. All our jute products are stitched by hand with jute yarn. This makes it a completely sustainable product with a high-quality look & feel.
Sustainable & local sourcing
The jute is sourced from a community plantation located around 300 kilometers from the jute braiding workshop. Jute is harvested once a year. When harvested, the land is used to plant rice or other crops. Jute hardly needs fertilizers to grow and no irrigation is needed as the area is rainy and wet. To grow jute, a limited amount of pesticides is sometimes needed, mostly anti-fungus and anti-insect, carefully sprayed on the leaves of the plant. Jute is a fast-growing plant with a high capacity for carbon absorption. 1 hectare of jute can absorb 15 tons of CO2 within 100 days. This is comparable to the CO2 emission when you drive 77,715 km by car. Jute that is used by originalhome has a low footprint on the environment and is harvested on a non-industrial scale.
Environmentally friendly production
The entire production of jute is executed by hand. This limits the amount of electricity and CO2 emissions. When the jute is mature, farmers harvest the jute without the use of machines, simply using traditional tools. The raw jute fibers are naturally dried in the sun. The indigenous crafts(wo)men of the jute workshops separate the long fibers and twist or braid them into ropes. These ropes are used to make baskets, placemats and bowls out of it. The jute products are completely unbleached and show the natural color of the jute. The entire product is stitched by hand with jute yarn. This entire process has a limited footprint on our planet and is therefore environmentally friendly.
Creating job opportunities
From harvesting until the end product, the entire process is executed by hand and/or with the support of simple traditional tools. Multiple people have to be involved, which means more jobs and income for the rural communities.
