Waterhyacinth is a very versatile material that can be used in many ways and finishes. The end product gives an array of natural looks and has a very soft feel. This strong material is used for baskets, trays or wall art. Water hyacinth is an aquatic plant that grows and multiplies rapidly invading whole rivers, lakes or irrigation canals. It made the transformation from a plant that was once considered a nuisance to the waterways to a valuable resource for home décor.

Low impact sourcing & production process

1. Harvested by hand

The water hyacinth plant is first harvested by locals and brought to their village. There usually women cut off the petioles.

2. Sundried leaves

Those are then dried by the sun on an open field. After drying, the water hyacinth petioles are parted into slices and weaved or differently processed into products.

Creating job opportunities

From harvesting until the end product, the entire process is executed by hand and/or with the support of simple traditional tools. Multiple people have to be involved, which means more jobs and income for the rural communities.
