Waterhyacinth
Water hyacinth is a water grass that grows abundantly in Indonesia. It is used as a raw material for baskets, trays and side tables. Water hyacinth is an aquatic plant that grows and multiplies rapidly overgrowing whole rivers, lakes or irrigation canals in Java, Indonesia. Local villagers need to remove it. There is no other option for them than to transform it into a valuable resource for home décor.
Sustainable & local sourcing
The water hyacinth comes from wild fields located 50 kilometers from the workshop. Water hyacinth is a very fast-growing plant as it can double its size within two weeks. Furthermore, as the plant spread on the water, it can accelerate the decomposition of other aquatic plants, which releases methane, a greenhouse gas 34 times more impacting than CO2. It is therefore essential to remove it frequently.
Environmentally friendly production
The entire production process of water hyacinth is manually executed and therefore has a small footprint on this planet. The water hyacinth plant is harvested by locals and brought to their village. Women usually cut off the petioles. These are then sundried and twisted into ropes and weaved or processed into baskets or other home décor products.
Creating job opportunities
From harvesting until the end product, the entire process is executed by hand and/or with the support of simple traditional tools. Multiple people have to be involved, which means more jobs and income for the rural communities.
