Teak Root Wood
Teak root wood is used as raw material for kitchenware like cutlery, cutting boards, plates and bowls. Teak root is a waste product of the teak plantations of Java, Indonesia. The roots have the same properties as teak wood which is a strong and extremely durable material. The kitchenware items are food safe and treated with non-toxic, natural oils.
Sustainable & local sourcing
Teak root is a very durable material as it has the same properties as the hardwood from the Teak trunk. The teak roots are usually considered a waste since they need to be unearthed for new plantations. The teak roots come from a teak plantation located about 50 km from the production area. The packaging and shipping locations are 250 km away from the workshop.
Environmentally friendly production
The entire production is executed by hand without any electricity to limit the impact on the environment. Local villagers collect the roots from the plantations and clean them. Craftspeople from the small workshop carve them into differently shaped kitchenware items. They use traditional tools for the production process. The wooden items are treated with completely natural and non-toxic oil, to provide food safe products.
Creating job opportunities
From harvesting until the end product, the entire process is executed by hand and/or with the support of simple traditional tools. Multiple people have to be involved, which means more jobs and income for the rural communities.
