Plant-based Wax
All originalhome candles are made from plant-based wax. They are 100% natural, vegan approved, unscented, and have a clean burn. This means that these candles emit less CO2 compared to a paraffin candle. The plant-based wax used to make these candles comes from an RSPO-certified plantation. The candles are poured by hand in a small factory in Java, Indonesia. Stearic acid (plant-based and certified) is the most sustainable wax as it doesn’t contain any chemical, synthetic, or animal-based reagents and the palm is a highly efficient crop.
RSPO & Traceable Sourcing
Palm oil can be produced sustainably. The palm kernels used for our candles come from palm trees growing on an RSPO-certified plantation on Sumatra, Indonesia. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is the global standard for sustainable production. When produced according to RSPO standards, palm oil can help protect the environment and local communities. Using RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil is preferable to substitution with other vegetable oils, which can cause more harm. The RSPO certification ensures that palm forests are well-managed by controlling the use of pesticides and fertilizers and defining planting procedures to avoid massive deforestation. The RSPO also protects the human rights of both workers and local villagers, providing equal opportunities for a sustainable livelihood and legal exploitation of the soil. By using RSPO-certified sustainable palm wax/oil in our products, we help protect the environment and local communities while supporting economic development and food supply chains. The palm plantation and palm processing factory that are used for originalhome candles are located next to each other in Sumatera, Indonesia. The non-toxic, ecological dyes and 100% cotton wicks used for the candles are imported from the USA and Germany to ensure high-quality ingredients for a flammable product.
The Benefits of Palm
The palm fruit tree is an efficient and productive crop that can produce high quantities of oil over small areas of land almost year-round. Palm kernel wax/oil is derived from the crushing of the kernel or stone in the middle of the fruit. One healthy palm tree can produce 12 to 14 bunches of palm fruits of 10 to 25 kg per year. The trees can be harvested for 30 years. Globally, palm oil supplies 40% of the world’s vegetable oil demand on just under 6% of the land used to produce all vegetable oils. This makes it an attractive crop for growers and smallholders who rely on the steady income it provides.
Environmentally friendly production
Our candles are produced in a small factory on Java, Indonesia, where the palm wax is melted in a specially designed kettle. The melted wax is poured by hand into iron molds. Once the candles are hardened, they are sculpted to the right size and a crown is applied using simple machines. The entire process uses a limited amount of electricity, with the majority of the process being executed by hand. This sustainable and eco-friendly production process ensures that our candles are of the highest quality and offer you a sustainable option to share your light with the world.
Creating job opportunities
From harvesting until the end product, the entire process is executed by hand and/or with the support of simple traditional tools. Multiple people have to be involved, which means more jobs and income for the rural communities.
Other Materials & Production
Nature is at the origin of the originalhome collection. To minimize a negative impact on our eco-system we solely use natural, organic, biodegradable, non-toxic and eco-friendly materials and/or materials that would otherwise be considered as waste. The products have been sourced and produced with the lowest environmental impact possible.
